Persimmon plantation in the valley of Strunjan / Strugnano, Slovenia 2017

The true characteristic of the area since the Middle Ages is the salt pans. Among the many autochthonous crops, khaki has recently appeared.

The persimmon, Diospyros Kaki, harvest precedes the festival dedicated to this fruit. Persimmons are generally harvested during the holiday season of the All Saints’ Day.

Just out of curiosity: the word Diospyros comes from the ancient Greek words “dios” (δῐος) and “pyron” (πῡρον). A popular etymology construed this as “divine fruit”, or as meaning “wheat of Zeus” or “God’s pear” and “Jove’s fire”.
